Client Testimonials

One of the best things to come out of 2020 was to be able to connect virtually for lessons with one of my hero’s in the world of Voice. As a voice teacher, we can get so complacent in our own instrument, that sometimes it is just necessary to once again be the student. Not only have my lessons with Nick helped me navigate my maturing voice, but my students have also thrived this year and I believe that is a true testament to my time with Nick. Truly grateful for this experience.

Nick Perna is far and beyond the best voice teacher I've ever had. I feel incredibly lucky to have found him as early in my vocal journey as I did, and I am so glad to be studying with him again all these years later. The thing I appreciate most about Nick's teaching is his empathy and ability to communicate concepts differently for each student. On top of that, his technical knowledge of the voice is unparalleled. There is not a single person to whom I wouldn't recommend him.

Steven Michael Patrick, tenor

I owe so much of my career to Dr. Perna. He helped me completely transform my voice. When I came to him in the summer of 2017, I had been singing and performing for a while, but had yet to discover what my voice could really do. I was singing with a lot of tension, which hindered my stamina, my range, and my vocal freedom. I also felt a little bit lost vocally. I knew I wanted a career in musical theatre, but didn’t feel like I was ready to sing many of the roles that I knew I was physically right for. Dr. Perna stepped in, and helped me find my voice. He met me right where I was at, both vocally and personally. With his guidance, I saw an immediate positive change in my voice! Perhaps more importantly, I have seen steady, healthy growth in my instrument over the past four years of studying with him. When I came to Dr. Perna, I struggled with general freedom in my voice, and did not feel comfortable on any notes above F4. Four years later, my range has grown to the point where I have and do perform full voice B flat 4, in a healthy way. As a music theatre baritenor, this has opened up numerous professional roles to me, and as my career progresses, I am always reminded of how Dr. Perna opened up so many options to me!

There are two things about Dr. Perna’s teaching method that I love most of all. First, he meets you where you are. While he possesses a world class knowledge of the classical voice and boasts an impressive classical performance career, he will work with you on your individual career goals, be it music theatre, pop/rock, or worship music. That is a rare find in a voice teacher. Secondly, he is incredibly intuitive to the voice and to the singer. All he has to do is hear you say hello at the beginning of a lesson, and he knows if you’re dehydrated, tired, sick, or feeling great, and can then structure the rest of the lesson around that knowledge. It’s incredible, and comes in quite handy. If you’re looking for a voice teacher, don’t wait. Go to Dr. Perna now!

Andrew Fehrenbacher, My Fair Lady National Tour 2022-2023

I am a voice teacher, and I study with Nick as part of my continuing education—it is wonderful the things we teachers can learn from each other! Nick has helped to deepen my understanding of voice acoustics and its practical application within the voice studio. His idea of the ‘paradigm shift,’ taking the voice out of its usual context, has helped me to be able to view my singing in new ways and to encourage my own students to grow, one small perspective change at a time.

Dr. Perna has helped me so much with my vocal technique. He is an amazing tenor himself and can demonstrate everything he asks you to do. I recommend him highly to anyone.

Tyler Wysong, Vocal Coach

I've been working with Nick virtually for the last two years and it's been a wonderful experience. Nick is an extremely knowledgeable, effective, and kind teacher, a rare combination in classical teaching. During this time, I've brought him works in the canon and modern/contemporary works, including extended techniques, and we've been able to work on it all.

Katherine Bruton, soprano

He saved my voice! I was a classically trained soprano who was poorly taught how to belt. He never gave up on me!! His explanations and willingness to experiment not only helped me understand the style, but he has helped me correct poor singing and bad habits. I will not walk into an audition room without my lessons from Nicholas Perna!!
